Get Real Math! Videos

The Get Real Math videos showcase over 40 math skills used in the real world. The videos serve as a capstone after a skill is learned in school to be applied in a real world situation at a manufacturing company. Math skills featured are 3rd grade through high school. The lesson plans were created by math teachers.

  • What does the load capacity of a cart have to do with math? Thumbnail
What does the load capacity of a cart have to do with math?
In this video, students are challenged to determine the length of a cross brace for a cart. They also need to determine the angle to set the cross brace at. The Pythagorean Theorem and right triangle trigonometry is needed to determine these dimensions. The importance of a strong weld is also discussed as the load the cart may need to carry could be very heavy and a solid cross brace put on securely is necessary.

What does a stable ship have to do with math?
Vessel stability is a critical topic for marine engineers. They need to use mathematics and science principles to ensure that a ship is stable and safe for crew, passengers and cargo. You can imagine stability by thinking about standing up in a canoe or kayak and the feeling of being unbalanced and like you may fall in the water. Once you are sitting in the canoe or kayak you likely will feel more stable. This video explores the math and science of ship stability.

What does a clean machine have to do with math?
A clean paper machine is a happy paper machine! Right triangle trigonometry and knowledge of simple fluid dynamics formulas are used to help engineers at Georgia Pacific trouble shoot ways to keep the paper production process running smoothly.
