The 28 Get Real Math videos showcase over 40 math skills used in the real world. The videos serve as a capstone after a skill is learned in school to be applied in a real world situation at a manufacturing company. Math skills featured are 3rd grade through high school. The lesson plans were created by math teachers.
Thank you for visiting the NEW Manufacturing Alliance's Get Real Math (GRM) webpage. The NEWMA Math Council values your opinion. Please feel free to provide feedback regarding the GRM videos, lesson plans, and/or webpage. Thanks!
What does toilet paper have to do with math?In this video, you will calculate the area of a parent roll of tissue and the area of a roll of toilet paper. Using that information, you can calculate how many rolls of toilet paper can be made each day.
4.MD.3 Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems.
**4.NBT.6 Find whole number quotients. (**With a Calculator?)
**5.NBT.6 Find whole number quotients of whole numbers. (**With a Calculator?)
6.NS.2 Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.

What does making cheese have to do with math?In this video, students will determine amounts different cheese varieties necessary to produce an order of shredded cheese blend.
6.RP Understand ratio concepts and use rational reasoning. 7.RP Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
Grades 6 & 7
What does the load capacity of a cart have to do with math?In this video, students are challenged to determine the length of a cross brace for a cart. They also need to determine the angle to set the cross brace at. The Pythagorean Theorem and right triangle trigonometry is needed to determine these dimensions. The importance of a strong weld is also discussed as the load the cart may need to carry could be very heavy and a solid cross brace put on securely is necessary.
8.G Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem.
G-SRT Define trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right triangles.
